Known as the Riot of 1884, a mob of over 10,000 attacked and burned the courthouse, prompted into action by the recent verdict of mansluaghter, rather than murder, brought against William Berner for killing his employer. Upset over the misuse of justice for the past several years, a protest meeting turned into a riot lasting three nights from March 28 through March 30. It ended with hundreds of National Guard troops with Gatling guns, more than 50 people dead, 200 injured, and the courthouse in ruins. This is a view of the damage in the court house, which was loacted at the corner of Court and Main Streets, after the riot.
