Hamilton County Courthouse
The Hamilton County courthouse, shown in this photograph, was built in 1887. It replaced the earlier courthouse that was burned during the riot of 1884 in protest of the conviction of William Berner, a white man who was found guilty of manslaughter for killing his employer. Many Cincinnatians felt the verdict should have been murder. In a similar case, a mixed-race man was convicted of murder and hanged. The 1887 courthouse was built of iron, brick, and Indiana limestone and is in the Romanesque style. An addition was completed in 1918.
This photograph was published in Book of Views of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1904 by the S. H. Knox & Company. Published not quite 125 years after the first settlers, it promotes the Queen City as a prosperous, burgeoning manufacturing center, and a desirable place to live. The booklet is 48 pages and measures 8” x 10” (20.32 x 25.4 cm).
